The poems “We alone” and “ It’s all I have to bring today-” are poems that tell the reader how much more valuable our life and common things are compared to rare and scarce objects. In “We alone,” by Alice Walker talks about how our society focuses on riches instead of other things like family and friends that are more valuable than gold or any other rare object from mother nature. In “It’s all I have to bring today-” by Emily Dickinson talks about how she give her heart is more valuable than the nature around her. These poems are both very similar, but also very different.
“We alone” has many feelings from the poet in it. Walker used her feelings about the society and expressed them on one sheet of paper. In the last stanza she says,“This could be our revolution:/To love what is plentiful/as much as/what is scarce.”(Walker line 14-17) In other words, Walker is saying that people in our society should love what is most seen as much as they love what is rare. Her advice given to her readers are very accurate because it is true. Walker puts images in your mind of the horrible and selfish people of the world that only care about money and gold. She explains that people should stop acting that way and look at the real important and valuable things in life.
“It’s all I have to bring today-” also has many feelings put in by the poet. Dickinson explains that she will give her heart and the nature and that only. In line 1-4 it says, “ It’s all I have to bring today-/This, and my heart beside-/This, and my heart, and all the fields-/And all the meadows wide-” (Dickinson line 1-4) Dickinson is saying that also that common things should be what is more valuable. She also puts an image in your mind about how the common things are more valuable than the fields, the meadows, and the precious objects and places that are considered valuable but what really is valuable is the people in your life. They will come one day but they will be gone the next.
Both of these poems express the feeling of the poet. However, both feelings are different. Walker just says it straight forward, but Dickinson makes you think about it. Also, both of the poems have good points and really well thought-out words that were used. These poets and the same imagery that made the poem more understanding, but Walker is mostly talking about everyone, or society. Dickinson is mostly talking about how she will only bring her heart because it is more valuable than rare objects of nature. These poems are very well-written and both capture almost the same image.
The poems “We Alone” and “ It’s all I have to bring today-” are both very good advice given to the readers. Even though they both had the same picture in mind, they both had many differences. The poets Alice Walker and Emily Dickinson probably changed many lives writing these poems. Now, I have learned to look at the valuable things, not the riches, not the rare objects found, but the common things we see every day.
