We Alone
Alice Walker
We alone can devalue gold
by not caring
if it falls or rises
in the marketplace.
Wherever there is gold
there is a chain, you know,
and if your chain
is gold
so much the worse
for you.
Feathers, shells
and sea-shaped stones
are all as rare.
This could be our revolution:
to love what is plentiful
as much as
what's scarce.
The poems, “We Alone,” by Alice Walker is a very well-written poem. Walker explains that people should love their family and friends, and other people more than they love scarce objects like gold, diamonds, shells and other scarce objects. The theme of this poem is about loving others before loving what you want. Just by reading this poem, it is easy to understand. Instead of using metaphors and similes, she says what she thinks.
I love this poem because what she is saying is true. Many people in the world would die for a 24 carrot gold necklace, or the largest diamond in the world. Sometimes the people become so attached to their scarce and expensive objects that they don’t care about their family anymore. Alice Walker explains this in a very good way, letting others understand. Walker has helped many people by writing this poem, hopefully more will read the poem and follow Walker’s advice.
